Gory Guerrero defeated Rey Mendoza for the NWA Lightweight Championship in Mexico City, Mexico. The victory brought him the first of two NWA Lightweight title reigns, the first of which lasted 1,102 days, the longest NWA Lightweight title reign ever.  Gory was later stripped of the belt during his second title reign after refusing to drop the belt to Mendoza and he held onto the physical belt for nine more years. 

Guerrero was the patriarch of the famous Guerrero wrestling family.
