Lewis, whose real name was Robert Herman Julius Friedrich began wrestling when he was 14 years old, performed across the United States and around the world, earning a reporter $4 million over the course of his wrestling career. He also managed NWA World Heavyweight champion Lou Thesz. Lewis was blind and had been in poor health for several years, but was recognized for his achievements by being inducted into George Tragos/Lou Thesz Hall of Fame in 1999 and the Professional Wrestling Hall of Fame in Amsterdam, New York in 2002..
