Promoter Jim Barnett held his first show in Australia for his World Championship Wrestling promotion. Barnett was partners with Johnny Doyle, running wrestling promotion that ran shows in Detroit, Denver and Los Angeles. In 1964, the two travelled to Sydney, Australia to evaluate the prospect of opening a territory there. They opened their promotion and called it World Championship Wrestling and held their first show at the Sydney Stadium on October 23, 1964. The promotion would run from 1964 – 1978.
